~ Cattle-Track's culture ~

1962 is a vivid year in my mind, even if I was only seven; it was the year I saw the last herds' transhumance in Ragna county of Scerni, along Cupello-Lanciano track, called Capecelatro.

From this main cattle-track and from the other (most famous) called Amiternum-Tavoliere branced off little pathways called tratturelli, that connected several small villages like Scerni, Carpineto Sinello, Gissi, Guilmi, Montazzoli.

Along these ways a cattle-tracks' culture developed, based on relationship among local peasants and foreign merchants and shepherds.

On 1577 the monk Serafino Razzi, during his journey in Abruzzo, apreciated the region's amenity and the abundance of local products. So he described this land ... "... peasants tell this place to be like land of Cockaigne, where thou always eat and drink ..."

After other traveller and after Razzi too, we have evidences of a prosperous commerce of food-stuffs coming from Vastese's inlands, leaving port of Vasto to Balkans ,Greece , Corfu and other further destinations: olive oil, grain, legumes and wines. And just wines were described by Razzi as excellent, specially that by Racciapparone, vine with grape-stalks so compact that several berries ripened with difficulty. On 1835 Del Re wrote: "... the must obtained from Racciapparone tends to turn sour, so it was needed add (partly or totally) boiled must, prepared in copper cauldrons. In this way the wine became sweet, strong and palatable; often comparable to Malaga from Andalusia (developed nowadays into wines from selected Pedro Ximenes vines).

Useasoned cheeses can be eaten with white wines or cerasuolo, meanwhile seasoned one with noble wines like Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
